Vince Chandler
Vince Chandler
Major: Broadcast
Year: Junior
Vince Chandler was raised in the home of journalists. Watching his parents come and go at all hours of the day, rush off to get the "scoop" at the scene of the latest breaking news or, stop the family car for spot news, he has always been attracted to his parents' work. Now a junior at the Pennsylvania State University, Vince is pursuing degrees in broadcast journalism and sports journalism. He hopes to use the skills acquired at Penn State to work for a professional sports publication or production company.

I've always had a fondness for photography and videoraphy ever since I can remember. I was immediately taken into photojournalism because I could tell people's stories. I love meeting new individuals, ordinary or extraordinary, and learning their backgrounds, ideals and hardships. With photojournalism I can share these with the world.

I love remembering stories and I love hearing new ones too. Better yet, I love telling them most of all. Whether it is through producing video stories, radio segments, or snapping a series of photographs, I love taking the responsibility of making sure a story is told right. I have found my passion in life and I would love to share great stories with those who are unaware of their existence.

Coming to journalism in a roundabout way, I learned quickly that my passion was in reporting. As I look forward to graduating this semester, I hope to continue to tell stories in a number of ways - not only through print reporting, but online ... using video, audio, photographs, or any other way readers wish to consume the news.

Ever since I can remember, I've loved telling stories. Although I started telling stories as an actress, I've come to appreciate and respect the power of photography and the magic that happens between a subject and a camera lens.

It is because of photojournalism that I have the opportunity to meet extraordinary people and to me, there is nothing more gratifying than to share the beauty of what I see in others. After I graduate I hope to get a job as a photojournalist in a newspaper or a magazine. Eventually my dream is to travel to underdeveloped countries and create documentary films to raise social awareness about the issues that affect these regions of our world.

The news is never the same. The unpredictability of what happens day to day is what has drawn me to the field of journalism and inspired me to be a reporter. I've always had to know what was going on, so this is a perfect fit.

A wise reporter once told me: Window on the world, that's what they call our profession. It was one of those moments when I knew how head over heels in love I am with journalism.

No matter what happens in the outlook-as-gray-as-newsprint journalism industry, there will always be a window on a community to keep open. There will always be stories to tell, and I want to be there to tell them.

I think the best articles are about people, not dollars or organizations. The best interviews are conversations, not questions. The ultimate goal of each of my stories is for us to understand each other a little bit better.

Anyone can read about a story, but seeing it firsthand is what can really move people and make a lasting impression on them. I love meeting new people and learning their story. Trying to visualize someone's joys or struggles to make people care is a challenge that will never grow old.
