I like finding the stories that are beneath the surface and my favorite part of journalism is talking to everyday people and giving them the forum to express their views.

Coming to journalism in a roundabout way, I learned quickly that my passion was in reporting. As I look forward to graduating this semester, I hope to continue to tell stories in a number of ways - not only through print reporting, but online ... using video, audio, photographs, or any other way readers wish to consume the news.

I stumbled upon the idea of journalism completely by chance. I've always loved writing, but I had never heard of a college major called "writing" so I dismissed it as just one of my hobbies. Even so I was still fascinated by people; I could sit for hours and try to figure out someone's entire life story without them saying a word to me. This proved to be difficult because there was no way to see if I was right or wrong. So from an early age I began questioning people about their lives. It was always simple questions, so I would seem like a nosy little kid, but people always opened up to me and told great stories. When I was in middle school, one of my teachers said "Phenola you would make a great journalist one day."

I've realized that my true calling is in editing. For me, there is nothing more satisfying than helping a reporter with a tricky lead, or seeing a reporter memorize AP Style without my help. I love writing, but I love editing more. I hope to one day be an editor of a magazine or a daily newspaper.

To join Penn State's student newspaper, you have to try out. In the first phase, you write a news story from a set of facts laid out on a sheet.
For me, scribbling with growing excitement into my bluebook, it fell together. It felt amazing. It was like I was creating something alive, something living and breathing, something with finality and truth. I finished first and left.

And walking down College Ave., exhilaration in every step I took, I knew this was how I wanted to spend my life.

Ever since I can remember, I've loved telling stories. Although I started telling stories as an actress, I've come to appreciate and respect the power of photography and the magic that happens between a subject and a camera lens.

A wise reporter once told me: Window on the world, that's what they call our profession. It was one of those moments when I knew how head over heels in love I am with journalism.

No matter what happens in the outlook-as-gray-as-newsprint journalism industry, there will always be a window on a community to keep open. There will always be stories to tell, and I want to be there to tell them.

I think the best articles are about people, not dollars or organizations. The best interviews are conversations, not questions. The ultimate goal of each of my stories is for us to understand each other a little bit better.
