Major: Journalism/Print
Year: Senior
Graduating at a time when journalists themselves wonder if the news business could be extinct, many ask me why I decided to be a print journalism major with an international studies minor. The answer is simple; there is nothing more important than understanding the world we live in and receiving that information from a reliable source. Living in an increasingly globalized world and constantly surrounded with information, the role of a journalist in society is more vital than ever to summarize, verify and explain.
I am confident that I have the skills, experiences, and most of all passion, to take on this huge responsibility. I am starting my post-graduation journey as a copy editor at the New York Times as part of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund internship. I greatly look forward to defending the newspapers credibility and learning as much as I possibly can while spending the summer in Manhattan.
My previous experiences leading up to now have given me a uniquely diverse perspective, which I plan to take with me wherever my career may go. At an internship at Harper's Bazaar, I learned the ins-and-outs of the fashion industry, which has always been a strong interest of mine. Even more importantly, I left with an incredible amount of people skills that I know will serve me well in the future. From working with PR professionals to training new interns to building relationships with messengers in the building, each interaction helped prepare me for a future in journalism.
Perhaps the most significant experience I have had was with 'The Florence Newspaper" in Florence, Italy during my time spent studying abroad there. Being a contributor to the English-language website helped me apply the news values I studied in the classroom to real life experiences. The thrill of exploring a new country and relaying what I learned to an English-speaking audience who depended on that source is something I will never forget.
I hope to get an opportunity to use my past experiences, strong work ethic, and people skills to bring journalism into the future.
