Multimedia journalists set sights on State College
The Keystone Multimedia Workshop moved to the center of the state for its summer 2009 edition. The workshop’s unique mix of students and professionals traveled to State College to hone their story telling skills by covering the Pennsylvania Special Olympics 40th Annual Summer Games and other events in Happy Valley.
Faculty members included Steve Mellon, multimedia journalist for post-gazette.com in Pittsburgh; Susan Kirkman-Zake, former managing editor/multimedia and special projects for the Akron Beacon Journal and now an adjunct professor at Kent State University (her husband, Cleveland-based photographer Bruce Zake lent a helping hand as well); John Beale, senior lecturer/photojournalism at Penn State; and Curt Chandler, senior lecturer/multimedia at Penn State.
Participants in the Keystone Multimedia Workshop used audio, still photography and video to create stories for the Web. They were given the choice of reporting a new story each day or working on a single project for several days. This was the second year for the workshop, which debuted in 2008 in Gettysburg.
The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Communications sponsored the workshop. Equipment support was provided by Olympus (audio recorders), Canon (video cameras) and Apple (computers).
